Leland Yee victory in California may represent "first major mobilization of the Asian community"

06.15.06 - Posted by AsiansVote

InsideBayArea.com reports on two Asian American wins in northern California, including State Senate candidate Leland Yee, who won the Democratic primary, defeating his closest opponent by 16 percentage points. An excerpt:

Yee's ability to rally voters, particularly Asian Americans who traditionally shy away from politics, helped turn his win into a drubbing, political observers said.

In the process, he may have woken up a sleeping giant and changed the face of Northern California politics much like Latinos have done in Southern California.

"You may have seen the first major mobilization of the Asian community. They're going to be more and more of a political force," said Bob Marks, co-host of Peninsula TV's political show "The Game."
