A tragic Boston Herald story about the killing of a Vietnamese American woman helps show the importance of Asian American elected officials. An excerpt:
Yesterday, City Councilor Sam Yoon visited the family to offer his condolences and was met with concern by the family’s matriarch, Trinh Nguyen, who wants to accompany her daughter’s body back to Vietnam.
“She’s afraid that they are going to come back for me,” On Nguyen told Yoon. “She just wants to leave here and take my sister back to Vietnam.”
Yoon’s office is accepting donations to help the family pay for funeral arrangements.
Yoon took office this year as Boston's first ever Asian American elected official. And now he's there the Nguyens. Similarly, John Liu, the first Chinese American New York City Councilperson, has gone out of his way to help folks like the
delivery man who was stuck for 81 hours in an elevator. Just one more reason to keep supporting progressive Asian American candidates.
Here's Sam Yoon's contact page for those who would like contribute donations towards the Nguyen family's funeral arrangements.
