AsianWeek interviews Norman Mineta

06.30.06 - Posted by AsiansVote

AsianWeek has interviewed Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta about his resignation and future plans. Those spoiling for a fight may be disappointed to hear that Mineta has "a real affection" for President Bush. But progressives can be happy that Mineta continues to speak out against racial profiling:

“We put together the Transportation Security Administration with a core group of seven people, and by Dec. 19, 2002, we had 65,000 people on board.

We busted our buns working 24/7 for months. And it was grounded on no racial profiling.

Still, I was getting battered by people saying, ‘Why shouldn’t we do racial profiling?’

But, I went through an experience where people couldn’t make the distinction between people who were piloting the planes that attacked Pearl Harbor, and those of us Japanese Americans who were living on the West Coast.”
