Vo fights for progressive values in Texas State House race

10.23.06 - Posted by AsiansVote

The Houston Chronicle has a great update on the Texas State House race between Vietnamese American Democrat Hubert Vo and Republican Talmadge Heflin. And Heflin is misrepresenting Hubert Vo's record in order to scare voters about immigrants. Here's the key excerpt:

"He voted to allow illegals to vote in races and to require the Department of Public Safety to give them driver's licenses without regard to legal status," Heflin says.
...
In fact, Vo voted for allowing school districts to hold elections on whether legal permanent residents should be allowed to vote in their school elections. He also voted for an amendment that allows the DPS to accept broader documentation from legal immigrants for licenses and other purposes.
Heflin apparently believes that "illegals" and "legal permanent residents" are the same thing. Heflin also lumps Vietnamese and Chinese refugees from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in with illegal aliens and says, "I want to make sure that they know this district's not the place to go to."

In contrast, Hubert Vo was honored for his efforts to help Katrina and Rita refugees:

"Hubert was there in our hour of need and continues to work tirelessly to help all of us put our lives back together," said Quan Huynh, President of the Louisiana Vietnamese Community.
Which candidate, Heflin or Vo, best exemplies the traditional American values expressed in the famous "New Colossus" poem at the base of the Statue of Liberty?
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore;
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
Hubert Vo is a great Texas progressive who represents the state's true blue future. It's time to step up and donate some dollars to help him retain his seat.
