Getting to know Mazie Hirono

As the Democrat running in a traditionally Democratic Hawaii district against Republican Bob Hogue, Mazie Hirono seems on track to be our next Asian American in the US Congress. And just so's ya knows, her recent columns in the "Hawaii Reporter" confirm that she's strongly pro choice, strongly against the Bush tax cuts for the super-wealthy, and strongly repulsed by the Republican Party's handling of the Foley case. She wants to bring the troops home from Iraq and has won the endorsement of the Sierra Club.
Hirono lost the 2002 Hawaii Governor's race to Republican Linda Lingle, and a September "Honolulu Advertiser" article included this bit of speculation:
The Democratic hold in the 2nd Congressional District is considered tenuous enough for the National Republican Party to include it on the list of those it has a fair chance of turning.
"I think the Republicans would look very closely at pulling out the last playbook and see how they did it the last time," said John Hart, assistant dean of communication at Hawai'i Pacific University.
Hirono brushes off the suggestion she may be vulnerable and notes 2nd Congressional voters — who live on the Neighbor Islands and outlying areas of O'ahu — picked her over Lingle in 2002.
Given Hirono's strengths and the recent cratering of Republican popularity across the nation, it's hard to imagine her losing this race. But you never know. So remind your friends in the Aloha State to vote for Hirono. And feel free to check out
Hirono's campaign website and
toss her some dollars, if you're so inclined.
